Steps to make Bacon Spinach Swirls:
  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Beat egg and water and set aside.
  3. Mix shredded cheese, parmesan cheese, garlic powder, black pepper and salt. Set aside.
  4. Unfold pastry sheet onto lightly floured surface (That is important and it will stick, if it's not lightly floured!). I use a sheet of wax paper on the counter for easy clean up and to roll up it up (you will see what I mean further down in the directions).
  5. Brush pastry with egg mixture.
  6. Sprinkle cheese mix on pastry.
  7. Sprinkle Bacon on top of cheese mix.
  8. Sprinkle spinach on top of bacon. (I tear up tiny pieces with my fingers)
  9. Roll up pastry, jelly roll style. I use the wax paper to roll it up, and twist up the ends so it looks like a package.
  10. Put pastry roll in freezer for at least 15 minutes to firm up just a bit.
  11. Remove from freezer and slice. I like mine thinner so I go just under 1/2 inch. If anything falls out of the slice, when you place it on your baking sheet just stuff it back in the swirl.
  12. Place swirls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. (This helps with clean up, and makes the bottoms crisp up nicely).
  13. Brush top of swirls with egg mixture.
  14. Bake for 14-16 minutes or until golden brown.
  15. Best when served warm but still tasty when served after they have cooled.
  16. TIPS: can use turkey bacon, or omit bacon for a meat free option. Also can add diced pimentos for contrasting color. - - I usually get 20-24 swirls out of one sheet of puff pastry, depending on how thick I cut them. - - If they are hard to cut, wrap them back up and throw them back in the freezer. They are easier to cut when partially frozen.
